Vannevar Bush is perhaps the greatest geek engineer of the 20th century--and one of the major figures to have shaped our present century. He ran Bell Labs, I believe, during WWII, and was Claude Shannon's boss....mentoring him in the creation of Information Science. After the war he became head of the NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission), but also conceived of the ARPANET. He is worth a story, and a place on any engineer or IT-maven's bookshelf.
